We met up with the Hamburg delegation that attended Allister’s Children’s International Summer Village (CISV) summer camp in Brandy Wine Valley (Pennsylvania) along with their families in a park in mid-town Hamburg. From left to right in the picture below, the delegation included Lena, [Allister], [Charlotte], Vanessa (delegation leader), Lianna, and Anton.
Here is another picture of the girls of the delegation, Vanessa, Lena, [Charlotte], and Lianna.
Vanessa was an example of a trend we observed in Germany – young people who had spent extended periods in other English-speaking countries (i.e. Canada, United States), presumably for an experience but also to gain fluency in English. Daniel, son of Wolfgang and Heinke, was on a home stay in Whistler, BC while Nicholas’ (shown below) older brother is currently on a home stay in Banff, Alberta.
It was a Sunday and the park where we met the Hamburg delegation was enjoyed by a large number of Hamburg residents. It was also equipped with a number of really neat attractions, one of which was this water soccer game, the object of which was to use these jets of water to advance a ball into the other team’s net.
Allister also enjoyed a sleep over at Anton’s house. Here he is with Anton and his Mom when we came to pick him up.
Finally, here is a picture of Nicholas, the other boy in the Hamburg delegation (along with Anton). Allister also had a sleep over and spent a day at school wit Nicholas and when we picked up Allister we joined Nicholas and his mother, Monika, at a very nice Hamburg restaurant that served excellent pizza. Laura-Lyn and I both wish our German was as good as Monika’s English and dinner was great opportunity to learn more about their family’s life in Hamburg.
